Commitment to the Environment

Ecological Education
As my Background page shows, in addition to a business education, I have a broad education that includes ecology, natural resource management, sustainability, agriculture, and personal development. This type of ‘natural education’ is rare among tax accountants. This background helps me to understand and work with clients committed to creating ecological sustainability and raising consciousness through their work. I also bring a whole-system approach to business decision making, which is essential for long-term strategic purposes.

Resource Efficiency
I have set up my accounting practice to be resource efficient. I conserve paper through electronic filing and correspondence. When I use paper, I use 100% post-consumer, non-bleached recycled paper. All of my electronic equipment is Energy-Star compliant. My monitors are low energy LCD monitors. I use an inkjet copier and inkjet printer, which are less toxic and more energy efficient than laser equivalents. My commute is a walk, and when I drive I am burning E-85 ethanol most of the time. My office is in a building that relies significantly on passive solar heat. My family and I have installed a simple solar electric system and intend to gradually shift more to solar and other alternative energy.

Local Self Reliance
My commitment to sustainability and the environment is behind my commitment to my community and to small business. I believe in local self reliance, as a fundamental principal of sustainability. Local self reliance is only achieved by small, home-grown enterprises, which minimize shipping and are less resource intensive. Because local owners live in the same community, they are more conscious of the local environment and their businesses are generally less polluting.

Volunteer Work
I work as a volunteer to facilitate change in individuals and in our economy, toward more environmentally conscious practices.  Since 1997, I have volunteered in various capacities for the Permaculture Credit Union, as a founder, two terms as Board Member, Treasurer, Chairperson of the Finance Committee, Committee member, and as an Advisor.  The Permaculture Credit Union lends money to individuals and families who are shifting their lifestyles to be more resource efficient.  I am also active in the Santa Fe Small Business Alliance, and the Santa Fe Green Business Network.

Local Agriculture
As a part of our commitment to local self reliance, my family and I run a market garden operation in Dixon, NM. After April 15, when tax season has ended, a good deal of my time is committed to the growing season.  On our farmland, we have an orchard and vegetable gardens. We use only organic methods.
